DNCE – Swaay

Swaay (Review)

With full intentions to review “Last Year Was Complicated” by Nick Jonas, I hit a tiny bump in the road when the song “Chainsaw” came on. Now, if you are as curious as I was with title, don’t be alarmed. Well, actually, let this be alarm the alarm to stop you where you are. The moment I heard, “I’ll take a chainsaw to the sofa/ Where I held your body close for so long, so long,” I was done with that album for the day.

Automatically, my mind switched a song I heard recently by DNCE, the band fronted by Joe Jonas, called “Toothbrush”. Yes, if you’re skeptical of the title, I was too. However, that one song, off an EP that was released in October of last year, led to more digging into the DNCE phenomenon.

Most will be familiar with the radio-friendly “Cake by the Ocean” that hit peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. With the not so subtle meaning of sex on the beach, listeners all around the world have become addicted to this song. Hell, it was nominated for a Kids’ Choice Award, Teen Choice Award and a Radio Disney Music Award. I find that the most laughable about it all.

However, back on track. This EP, “Swaay”, is becoming shockingly successful in the terms of its time of release and time of actual success. Oddly enough, it works. The songs all have very light and playful lyrics, which is perfect for summer. The whole EP is short and provides a perfect set list for their stint on the Revival Tour featuring Selena Gomez. And finally, it’s a nice prelude to a full-length album to be released later this year.

So, unfortunately for Nick, I’m left with a sour first impression after being fully engaged with “Jealous” and “Levels”. But fortunately for Joe and his band, they were able to somehow construct an EP campaign that will lead right into their debut.
