Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies (Review)

There seems to be a general consensus, I’m finding, that you either love HBO’s “Big Little Lies” or you hate it. Reading reviews before the show made me extremely skeptical and cautious. The plot basically reads as rich white people dealing with rich white people problems (what private school is best, how to top a small girl’s birthday party in revenge, etc.).

There’s one twist, though: someone dies at the end of it all. Now, I have not read the self-titled book or any plot synopsis, so I am in the dark on the “Five Ws” and hope to be able to say that by the end of the series.

Yes the one sentence plot written above is without question true – at least for the three episodes right now – and yes I do feel like that sense of guilt one may feel when watching one of the “Real Housewives” series. The redeeming quality? The acting.

Who better to cast than Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley? It may not shine a light on all women, however, this is television and there is a method to the madness. First, it’s quality acting. No question. Second, you are hardly seeing men on the screen. For 80 percent of the show, “Big Little Lies” is not taking the camera off the lives of these women and their stories. Although “Big Little Lies” is a prime example of the success a show with a primarily female-lead cast can have, the problem of women actresses not getting substantial and meaningful roles remains and “Big Little Lies” should act as the much-needed reminder that we do not have enough actresses on screen.

Regardless, HBO has once again catapulted another show as your Sunday night guilty pleasure.

Are you a Madeline? A Celeste (let’s hope not)? Or a Jane? It’s the odd question, I, a 21-year-old male ask myself throughout the show. No shame. Just don’t get too attached because one of these three is likely to die.

The bottom line is this: if you like drama, wine, and an hour of engrossing yourself in the problems of “Real Housewives”-esque moms, this is the show for you.
